Inspired by the eighteen ancient stones in front of the Earth Science Building at the University of Toronto St. George campus, Plants and Planet tells the silent stories of nature. This scrapbook is a tribute to my mother’s passion for Chinese stone culture and her extraordinary ability to appreciate these stones. Her keen eye inspired us to create this collection, where we can observe the interconnectedness of the natural world and the built environment.
Plants and Planet captures moments when human-made structures are embraced, altered, or reclaimed by nature. By exploring the interplay between human activities, technologies, and social systems, this scrapbook challenges conventional understandings of nature and culture. It highlights how human actions create novel ecosystems and unexpected environmental changes, encouraging reflection on how we perceive and interact with our environments. From winter to early spring, we coincidently documented these scenes in different seasons, which add a dynamic fourth dimension to our built environments.
